Two things are necessary for any hedging program, not just tax hedging, to work. The first is pure economics--conveying the nature of the hedge and the reasons for doing it in a way that is easily understood by the proper constituencies (the Board of Directors, senior management, or--in the case of tax hedging--the taxpayers). The second is political acceptance of the hedging program after it has begun. In today's post, we discuss the politics of hedging risk.
